Fred Van Lente is the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning writer of comics like Archer & Armstrong (Harvey Award nominee, Best Series), Action Philosophers! (American Library Association Best Graphic Novel for Teens), and Cowboys & Aliens(with Andrew Foley), the basis for the feature film. In 2017 Van Lente branched into the world of prose with his debut novel, the stand-up murder mystery Ten Dead Comedians. His follow-up novel, The Con Artist, a “geek noir” about murder at San Diego Comic Con, debuted in 2018. Andrew Foley writes things, things like the graphic novels PARTING WAYS and DONE TO DEATH, the video games BALDUR’S GATE: SIEGE OF DRAGONSPEAR and BALDUR’S GATE II: ENHANCED EDITION, and brief biographical summaries like the one you’re reading right now. He currently resides in Edmonton, Alberta with his lovely and talented wife, graphic designer Tiina Andreakos, as well as four cats and a dog of wildly varying degrees of talent and loveliness.

Luciano Lima is a comics artist living in São Paolo, Brazil, where he is part of Fabricio Grellet’s Magic Eye Studios. He has worked for Dark Horse on Grifter and The Mask, for Marvel on Wolverine and X-Force, and for the French publisher Semic.

Luciano Kars & J. Wilson are both staff artists at Brazil’s Magic Eye Studios, a comics art and script studio managed by Fabrício Grellet that has produced work for comic book and graphic novel publishers around the world.

Silvio Spotti was born in São Paulo, where he still lives and works. He has a degree in arts from the FMU/FAAM university, and began his career in 1992 as a penciller for the small press in Brazil. In 1996 he started working as an inker, working on a Brazilian version of the Street Fighter comic book, through the Arthur Garcia Studio. In 2003 he did his first U.S. work through Magic Eye Studios, inking IDW’s Wynonna Earp. Since then, he has inked Stargate SG1, Robocop, and Stargate Atlantis for Avatar Press, as well as Daniel Prophet of Dreams for Alias Comics. As a penciller/inker, Spotti has also done work for Disney (USA/Europe), drawing stories for Donald Duck, Kim Possible, Toy Story, Little Mermaid, and others.

Bringing Cowboys & Aliens to the Big Screen

The project began development in April 1997, when Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures bought the film rights to the Cowboys & Aliens concept pitched by Scott Rosenberg as he was actively developing the graphic novel. After the graphic novel was published in 2006, development on the film was begun again, and Favreau signed on as director in September 2009.

On a budget of $163 million, filming for Cowboys & Aliens began in June 2010, in New Mexico and California. Despite studio pressure to release the film in 3-D, Favreau chose to film in anamorphic format (widescreen picture on standard 35 mm film) to further a “classic movie feel”. Measures were taken to maintain a serious Western element. The film’s aliens were designed to be “cool and captivating”, with some details, such as a fungus that grows on their wounds, created to depict the creatures as frontiersmen facing adversity in an unfamiliar place.

Cowboys & Aliens premiered at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con and was released theatrically in the United States and Canada on July 29, 2011.
